Travel & Telescopic Rods

A travel fishing rod breaks down small enough to fit in a suitcase, a backpack, or under the seat of a car. Some are multi-piece rods that separate into four, five, or six sections, and others are telescopic rods that collapse into themselves in a few seconds. Either way, the point is to bring a real rod on a trip where a one- or two-piece rod would stay home. Business travelers fish a hotel pond, backpackers reach alpine lakes, and families throw a rod in the trunk for a beach day.
Multi-piece travel rods keep more of the feel and action of a full-length rod, and most come with a hard tube case to protect the sections in transit. Telescopic rods win on convenience and price, though the extra guides and overlapping sections make them a bit heavier and less sensitive.
When you shop for a travel rod, check the collapsed length against the bag you plan to pack, then match power and length to the fish you expect to catch at your destination. A medium-light spinning travel rod covers trout, bass, and panfish for most trips, and heavier travel rods exist for inshore saltwater. Look for a case included with the rod and for spare tip sections if you fish rough terrain. A travel rod trades some performance for portability, so buy for the trips you plan to take.
