You will find surf rods in both spinning and conventional casting styles. Spinning versions are easier to cast in wind and are the standard choice for most beach anglers, while conventional surf rods pair with heavy-duty casting reels for maximum distance and drag pressure on big fish.
When you shop for a surf rod, look at the sinker weight rating first, since you need to match it to the surf conditions where you fish. A rod rated for 2 to 6 ounces handles calm beaches and light rigs, and a rod rated for 6 to 12 ounces holds bottom in strong current. Then consider length, action, and whether you will keep the rod in a sand spike or hold it while working plugs.
